Google completed a deal to buy a very important data center in Manhattan, New York. The facility is located on 111 8th Avenue. It is one of Manhattan’s largest buildings and a key hub for Internet traffic. Google closed the deal in partnership with Taconic Investment Partners, Jamestown Properties and the New York State Common Retirement Fund to purchase the facility. According the the New York media the deal is around $1.9 billion.
111 Eighth Avenue data center is among the world’s best equipped IT buildings. The original purpose when it was built was to host Port Authority Commerce Building in 1932, and was redeveloped for telecom use by Taconic in the late 90s. The enormous building houses major data center operations for Digital Realty Trust, Equinix, Telx, Internap and many other providers and networks, as well as 500,000 square feet of office space for Google.
